At the COP27 summit last week, Pakistani leadership, representing the G77 umbrella group of developing countries, called on developed countries to increase their financial support for helping developing countries recover from and adapt to climate disasters (AP News). While Pakistan is only responsible for 0.4% of the world’s historic emissions, it has borne the brunt of the impacts of climate change, ranking as the eighth most climate-stressed country.

On March 1, Pakistan announced plans to lodge a complaint against India at the United Nations (UN) that accuses India of "eco-terrorism" over air strikes that damaged pine trees. According to Malik Amin Aslam, Pakistan's climate change minister, Indian jets bombed a "forest reserve" on February 26 near the northern Pakistani town of Balakot and caused significant environmental damage. Pakistan is undertaking an environmental impact assessment that will be the basis for its complaint at the UN and other forums.

The High Court of Justice in the Pakistani city of Lahore mandated the creation of a climate council that will require the Pakistani government to meet its environmental commitments. The case that prompted the rule was brought by a farmer named Asghar Leghari who claimed that Pakistan had violated his fundamental rights due to lack of action on climate change.
