Corporations and other nongovernmental entities now regularly work to develop voluntary agreements, standards, and other practices aimed at fostering sustainability and reducing environmental impacts. This growth in “private governance” is implemented through various vehicles, including collective standardsetting, certifications, supply chain agreements, and other mechanisms. The influence of private governance is broad, impacting industries from electronics to forestry to apparel, as well as many others.

Linda Breggin is a Senior Attorney with the Environmental Law Institute. Scot Case is the Market Development Director for UL Environment and has been consulting on green marketing and other sustainability issues since 1993. Ann Condon is General Electric’s Director of Resource and Environmental Strategies and has been deeply involved in ethical supply chain issues for over 10 years. Scott Cooper is Vice President for Policy and Government Affairs at the American National Standards Institute. Sheila Millar is a Partner with the law firm of Keller and Heckman LLP, one of the Vice Chairs of the International Chamber of Commerce Marketing and Advertising Commission, and Chair of that Commission’s Working Group on Sustainability. Ryan Tisch is a Partner in the antitrust practice at Crowell & Moring, LLP.
