NINE JURISDICTIONS SIGN AGREEMENT TO BAN COMMERCIAL FISHING IN ARCTIC

Nine jurisdictions—Canada, China, Denmark, the European Union, Iceland, Japan, Norway, Russia, South Korea, and the United States—have signed a legally binding agreement that bans commercial fishing in the high seas portion of the Central Arctic Ocean. The Agreement to Prevent Unregulated High Seas Fisheries in the Central Arctic Ocean bans commercial fishing in the region for 16 years, and commits the jurisdictions to a joint scientific research and monitoring program to gain a better understanding of the changing Arctic ecosystem and determine the region's potential for commercial, sustainable fisheries in the future.
