ALBERTA POLITICAN CALLS FOR END TO U.S. FUNDING OF CANADIAN ENVIRONMENTAL MOVEMENT

02/13/2012

On Thursday, a Conservative Alberta legislator called for a bill that would block foreign funding of the Canadian environmental movement. MP Brian Jean hinted that aboriginal chiefs may have received payments to oppose major projects, such as the Northern Gateway pipeline, while asking for details on research showing U.S. trusts had given $300 million to environmental groups in Canada. Vivian Krause, who has spent years researching documents on spending by environmentalist groups, said that she had found no evidence of what Jean described as a "sponsorship scandal." Alberta New Democratic Party MP Linda Duncan said that Jean was trying to spread a "reprehensible" rumor, and warned that his efforts may also harm right-wing groups and churches that take money from U.S. associates and supporters.
